The following
descriptions are basic as programs can be adapted to
meet individual teacher needs. And of course, we are
happy to design programs that are not included in these
descriptions.
The Game of Authors (Grades K – 12)
This program is designed to complement your own
literature/language arts curriculum, whether you are
reading Beatrix Potter or Edgar Allen Poe. The tour
focuses on the pastime of reading and on the
availability of literature to an educated, leisure class
of citizen, as well as on the authors and their works.
The tour is delivered in the elegantly appointed rooms
of the 1894 Victorian town home designed and built for
the Hunter family of Norfolk.
Victorian Childhood (Grades K – 3)
Focus on the lifestyles of Victorian children at home,
at school, at play and often at work. Emphasis is placed
on similarities and differences between modern childhood
and that of one hundred years ago.
At Home with the Hunters (Grades 4 – 12)
Examine Victorian home life in an urban setting
following the Civil War and Reconstruction, including
the typical everyday activities of adults, children and
servants. Special attention is paid to the house itself
– its architecture and decoration and the influence of
industry and technology.
Home for the Holidays (grades 3 – 12)
Explore the European influence on Victorian American
Christmas customs and traditions. The tour focuses on a
family’s festive celebration, complete with
traditional period decorations.
’Twas the Night Before Christmas (Grades K – 3)
Introduce your students to Clement Moore’s classic
holiday poem, as well as European influences on American
holiday traditions.
Victorian Children’s Hour (Pre-School –
Kindergarten)
What a delightful way to introduce the Victorian World
to our youngsters of today. For the “littlest
Victorians,” these programs are specially designed for
your own individual groups of youngsters. Included are
stories, songs and activities. Popular themes include
animal stories (Peter Rabbit and all the Beatrix Potter
creatures!), fairy tales and the classic “’Twas the
Night Before Christmas.”
Norfolk of 1900 (Grades 4 – 12)
This expanded program includes a guided architectural
walking tour of the Historic Freemason District, in
addition to the museum house tour. The two-part tour
explores issues such as urban development following the
Civil War and Reconstruction, advances in technology,
the business and commercial climate in cities and the
variety of educational opportunities available to
families at the turn of the twentieth century.
In General:
Please allow 1 – 1-½ hours for each tour/program.
Tour fees are $1 - $2 per student.
The maximum number of students accommodated per tour is
36 (which is broken into groups of 12 each). We regret
that we can only accommodate one adult/chaperone for
each 12 students.
